I'm watching. You're watching. Let's talk.

Series premiere: 18 to Life on CBC (updated)

In television on 01/04/2010 at 10:44 am

Series name
18 to Life

Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 at 8 p.m. ET on CBC

Regularly airs
Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on CBC, right before Little Mosque on the Prairie.

Back in the 1960s, getting engaged at age 18 was de rigueur. But in the post double aughts? OutRAGEous! Or at least the starting point for a comic look at love and marriage as seen through two newly engaged teens and their parents, who are right from central casting: the uptight parents and the hippie parents. Wait? Hippies? Oh yeah, and there’s an Iraqi refugee in there too. Um…

Primary cast and crew
Stacey Farber (Degrassi: The Next Generation) is Jessie, the girl.
Michael Seater (Life with Derek, the Zack Files) is Tom, the guy.
Peter Keleghan (The Newsroom) is Tom’s uptight dad.
Ellen David (Surviving My Mother, Mambo Italiano) is Tom’s uptight mom.
Al Goulem (The Tournament) is Jessie’s hippie dad.
Angela Asher (Degrassi: The Next Generation) is Jessie’s hippie mom.

Buzz buzz
This is the first new show of a small wave of new stuff at the CBC. Coming up: Republic of Doyle on Wednesday, Kids in the Hall murder miniseries next week and Don Cherry biopic soon after.

UPDATE: But what do I know anyway? After finally having seen the pilot I predict…
Kinda cute! The two leads are adorable yet not too sweet. There were a couple of scenes that ended with clangy dialogue, but that was a slim 10 per cent. The parents definitely have a lot of room for growth, choppy and predictable as their pilot scenes were, but nothing off putting. I’d watch it again. You?

Other reviews
Andrew Ryan of the Globe and Mail says it’s a little heavyhanded on the parental reaction to the engagement, but when left to the young leads, it shows a lot of promise.

Official website
Let’s see. Trailer and a list of spots Stacey Farber And Michael Seater visited to promote the show (which did NOT include Montreal, sniff!), a contest offering an “18 to Life bike” as a prize, and … Nothing! Not so much an official website really is it?

Can’t wait for the next new-series preview?
Republic of Doyle, also on CBC, starts Wednesday, Jan. 6. If the butler has dinner ready and the maid’s done the housework, I might have a preview posted Tuesday. Minions? Hear that?

Here is where I’d usually be pointing you towards the list of season debuts and return dates but I’m a little behind. Butler? Maid? A little help here.
