Talk-show tango March 1-5: Jay Leno’s back. Ack

In television on 02/28/2010 at 11:09 pm

So, the story of the week for the talk-show world is the return of Jay Leno to the Tonight Show, Monday, March 1 at the usual 11:35 p.m. timeslot on NBC.

The L.A. Times has a good look at the scenario, asking whether Leno can reclaim his ratings lead and if NBC is wise to gamble so much on Leno.

Me? I dislike Jay Leno. A lot. Not, however, because he pushed Conan O’Brien out of The Tonight Show job he held for just a few months, after Leno’s prime-time experiment failed. The blame for that embarrassment, as the L.A. Times also points out, rests squarely on the puny shoulders of NBC. They blew it when they told Leno to leave the Tonight Show, they blew it when they failed to live up to the committment they made to O’Brien’s run on The Tonight Show.

I dislike Jay Leno for his mean and low comedy. Creepy sex references are the worst. Here’s only a recent example, in his final-week interview with the sweet, young and shocked but still gracious Gaboury Sidibe, Oscar-nominated star of Precious. After she detailed her experience at the Golden Globe awards ceremony, of getting thoroughly drenched by rain on the red carpet and of seeing George Clooney, Leno lecherizes, and I’m paraphrasing, “So, you’re saying George Clooney made you wet?”

This man used to be America’s favourite late-night talk-show host? Craig Ferguson is blue. David Letterman is caustic. Jimmy Kimmel is blunt. But they are not mean or creepy. Watch them instead.

I’ll have the usual Talk-show tango list of talk-show guests later Sunday. See you then.
