True Blood returns and some homework is required

The good news is that Season 3 of HBO’s vampire drama True Blood is, as I write this, only hours away from premiering, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Canada.

The bad news is that, having seen an advance copy, I must warn you that a return to the end of Season 2 is required to make the best of tonight’s slippery-fast Season 3 debut episode. That’s bad news for me at least, who did not love the whole Maryanne Forrester-orgy-in-Gran’s-front-yard-and-also-let’s-make-the-whole-town-into-black-eyed-zombies busines. Did not like it one bit. Tedious, pointless in terms of character and story development and it detracted from what I think, on a lofty literary level of course, is much more compelling: whether Sookie and Eric will ever get together outside of her dreams. (And if any of you keeners have read ahead in Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse novels and feel compelled to answer, please resist.)

To recap the Season 2 finale, click here (thank you True Blood Fan Wiki) or you could take advantage of HBO Canada’s incredible thoughtfulness and make tonight a True Blood orgy of your own: From 6:15 p.m.  ET until the 9 p.m. Season 3 premiere, HBO Canada is repeating the last three episodes of Season 2.

Now then, between now and 6:15 p.m. ET, read this clever scene-setter from the Washington Post.

Also, make time to amuse yourself with a few Drops of True Blood, aka the “minisodes” that HBO had crafted to rewhet our appetites for the great characters in its series. There are six minisodes in all and you can click here to watch them all. Some are merely amusing little flourishes (Bill buys a ring!). Another (Jason in existential crisis) helps set the stage for this season’s menace to Bon Temps: scary, beastly presences crouching in the bushes.

From the high ground that is Team Eric, I wish you happy vampire drama viewing and leave you with this sex- and blood-drenched Season 3 preview.
