The speculation has been fever pitched on who will replace Steve Carell after he exits the U.S. version of The Office; he announced earlier this year that the coming season would be his last.

Now, E news via Reuters/Hollywood Reporter has an interesting bit: that Harvey Keitel might be the new boss at Dunder Mifflin. The first reaction here at TV watching central was bawdy laughter. Mobster? Sure. Cop, definitely. But dweeb in small-c corporate culture? Well, he could play twisty, dark comedy pretty well. The star of Taxi Driver, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Bad Lieutenant and a million other film roles has even entered the world of TV, having co-starred in the short-lived U.S. adaptation of Life on Mars.

Seventy-one-year-old Keitel, according to the story, has not yet been approached, but Paul Lieberstein, who plays Toby and is one of the show’s producers. But the back story is ready:

“He’s an old salesman who thought he could retire and the stock market went down, and he has to come out of retirement to work for a few years,” Lieberstein explains.

Wait, what? Harvey Keitel is 71?
