I'm watching. You're watching. Let's talk.

Series debut: Sherlock

In television on 09/09/2010 at 9:41 pm

Well, series is a bit of a stretch. It’s a Brit three-episode miniseries, but more episodes are on the way. So…

Series name
Sherlock

Debuts
Friday, Sept. 10 at 11 a.m., 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. (all times ET) on Showcase

Regularly airs
Three consecutive Fridays

Premise
Hugh Laurie’s House is no longer the only modern incarnation of Sherlock Holmes. In this new Sherlock from BBC/PBS, Holmes is a consultant helping the police when they need it, only now he has access to CSI-type whizbangery and smartphones and such. As in the original, Watson is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan. But with all the modernity and newfangled technology, it’s still Holmes’ uncanny eye for detail and powers of deduction that win the day.

Primary cast and crew
Benedict Cumberbatch (Atonement, The Last Enemy) is Sherlock.

Martin Freeman (The Office UK, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) is Watson.

Rupert Graves (God on Trial, The Forsyte Saga) is Insp. Lestrade.

Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) and Mark Gatiss (Doctor Who) are co-creators.

Buzz buzz
The show has already aired on the BBC this past summer, so beware spoilers if that gets your blood boiling. Pity the poor Americans who have to wait until Oct. 24 to see the miniseries on PBS. If you love the show and want more, the DVD is out in North America on Nov. 9, including the unaired pilot, making-of featurettes, commentary by the series stars and “more”, says this press release.

But what do I know anyway? After NOT having seen the pilot I predict…
“The game,” Mrs. Hudson, “is ON,” Sherlock declares with a sly smile. And I, Mrs. Hudson, and IN.

An actual review

The Globe and Mail’s John Doyle looooooves it. And, as you might know, he doesn’t love a lot.

Official website
Basic info on the PBS.org site, with a tantalizing bit of trailer.

Facebook
Not sure this is the official BBC series’ Fbook page, but if not, it’s as good as. Caution though: the three-part miniseries finished up on the BBC a while back so there might be spoilers. (And if this isn’t the official site and have address of same, please forward for all to share.)

Can’t wait for the next new-series preview?
Lost Girl debuts Sunday on Showcase at 9 p.m. ET. ‘Though I’ll be at Cake Boss.
