Premise
Mike the cop and Molly the teacher are convinced they’ll die alone surrounded only by cats, but somehow they meet and fall in love. Done before, you say? Well the twist here is that they meet at an Overeaters Anonymous support group because they are both considerably overweight and have been most of their lives. The twist on this twist? The comedy is not cheap fat jokes.

Primary cast and crew

Billy Gardell (My Name Is Earl, Yes Dear) is Officer Mike Biggs

Melissa McCarthy (Gilmore Girls, Samantha Who?) is Molly Flynn

Reno Wilson (Prison Break) is Officer Carl McMillan, partner

Katy Mixon (Eastbound and Down) is Victoria Flynn, sister

Swoosie Kurtz (Pushing Daisies, Huff) is Joyce Flynn, mother

But what do I know anyway? After having seen the pilot I predict…
I’ve already said the twist on the basic romantic-comedy premise here is that the characters are both very fat but that the comedy is not limited to cheap fat jokes. I should amend that. There are a lot of fat jokes. Some of them, okay, are cheap, but none of them are mean. I feared extremes of sweetness, the finger-wagging health-consciousness of Biggest Loser or just plain meanness. But this is very funny, and sweet but not too sweet. Two characters awkwardly pursuing love and trying to make the best of their imperfect selves. Relatable. Nice. And it doesn’t hurt that it features Swoosie Kurtz as Molly’s skinny mother and Kate Mixon as the dopey skinny sister, both nasty good. My fave show of the season so far (although I have not, being a mere part-time blogger of a TV critic, seen all the new shows).

Other reviews

Tim Goodman of the San Francisco Chronicle completely disagrees, saying it’s laughing at fat people, not with these two characters.
