TV on DVD: Who Do You Think You Are? Season One

In television on 03/15/2011 at 2:21 pm

I am late to the game (what’s new) on Who Do You Think You Are?, but I’ve enjoyed the sampling I’ve done of Season 2 now on NBC Friday nights. A particular highlight was Kim Cattrall’s return to the U.K. to trace a grandfather who’d gone awol from the family. The hour was riveting and touching, with Cattrall, in the end, introducing herself to elderly relatives with very troubling news about their shared heritage.

The series (which began in the U.K. and had a Canadian version in 2007-8), asks can you really know yourself (and your fave celebrities) until you know where and from whom you come? It hooks up celebrities with genealogists (get used to ad nauseam references to ancestors.com) and other experts so they can trace at least one branch of the family tree to a usually heart-string-pulling scene. See Rosie O’Donnell (also from Season 2) meet her grown cousins! Next new episode: Steve Buscemi on Friday, March 25 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Citytv.

If you’d like to cover the first season, now’s the time: In Season One, the DVD of which is on sale as of March 15, 2011, the celebrities featured are: Matthew Broderick , Lisa Kudrow, Spike Lee, Sarah Jessica Parker, Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields and Emmitt Smith. Seven episodes on two discs. No extras on the series (you can find some diversions on the NBC site by clicking here).

The excellent site TVshowsonDVD has made this its pick of the week.

Stock up on tissues and hit play.
