TV on DVD: Friday Night Lights makes one last pass

In television on 04/06/2011 at 9:08 am

“Clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose.”

Except fans of Friday Night Lights DO lose because the acclaimed drama about life in a one-game town is coming to an end, starting its final, fifth-season run on Friday, April 15, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

The good news? You don’t have to wait until April 15 as the final season DVD was released April 6, 2011.

I’m torn. I am eager to watch new episodes of this series that I have followed since it began, despite the zig-zag play of NBC running it for the first couple of seasons and then moving it to DirecTV satellite, followed by a replay later on NBC. And it has always been worth the trouble to find it and wait for it. But I might just bypass this DVD release and say goodbye a little bit every week for 13 episodes.

Goodbye to one of the most fully realized married couples in Coach and Mrs. Taylor, played by Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton.

Goodbye to a story that had the scope and the characters to fall into full-on soap opera, but rose and mostly stayed well above. Well, there was that regrettable storyline back in Season 2 about the murder of Tyra’s attacker, but that’s long enough ago that I’ve forgiven and almost forgotten.

Goodbye to excellent writing, covering multiple storylines with depth and humour and here I’m thinking of Landy (Jesse Plemons) as the enduring and triumphing nerd, QB and dutiful grandson Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) and his hard life, Lyla Garrity (Minka Kelly) as the It girl who crumpled and remade herself and can’t forget Jason Street (Scott Porter) and his own fall and rise.

Go Panthers. Go Lions. Go Texas.

Here is a list of the extras:
