Series debut: Sports Show with Norm Macdonald

Former SNL comic Norm Macdonald (he’s the guy not painted, above) has come back to us. He’s been blundering around, doing comedy here and there, but now he’s got a new regular gig, a Daily Show-esque weekly sports “news” show called Sports Show with Norm Macdonald.

It premiered in the U.S. Tuesday on Comedy Central and gets its Canadian debut Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 10 p.m. ET on the Comedy Network.

After the show:

Well, I just finished watching the pilot episode of Sports Show with Norm Macdonald and, Norm, I can’t believe the things you got me to laugh at.

As Ken Tucker wrote on ew.com, Macdonald’s perpetual grin and monotone sarcasm have a way of taking some horribly inappropriate jokes and making them, well, not appropriate, but impossible not to laugh at if only for a second.

The format of the show is similar to that of The Mercer Reportand The Daily Show, with a touch of Real Time’s closing segment.

The inappropriate bits were part of the segments that riffed on recent sports news like Mike Tyson’s Punch Out iPhone app well, you watch for yourself when the episode begins its online replays.

The news bits were interspersed with taped segments (Norm goes undercover with pro athletes) and a rant segment that wondered What the H is going on with Tiger Woods’ sex addiction.

There were a couple of the dead moments that are parr for the course with Macdonald’s dry dry approach, but mostly this was funny and well-paced. Definitely I will check it out again.

What do you think? (I”ll replace the 90-second “teaser” with the video replay as soon as it shows upon the Comedy Network site.)
