Fox spikes Chicago Code, Human Target, but greenlights J.J. Abrams’ Alcatraz, Bones spinoff

In television on 05/11/2011 at 1:29 pm

Damn. I really like Chicago Code, the Monday night cop drama on Fox from Shawn “The Wire” Ryan. But the network didn’t have faith, I guess.

Ryan is taking it in stride, tweeting and replying to tweets. (Two more new episodes to come, btw.)

The Hollywood Reporter has a story that Fox, eager to lay out their plans for fall 2011, is cancelling these:

  • Chicago Code, RIP. A damn smart, funny cop show that was just starting to get a real head of steam.
  • Breaking In (Christian Slater’s new action series? No, me neither?)
  • Lie to Me, the Tim Roth “I know you’re lying!” psych drama. Meh.
  • Human Target, another heartbreaker. I loved this comic-book adaptation starring Mark Valley, Jackie Earl Haley and Chi McBride. Crap.
  • and Traffic Light, the U.S. romcom spinoff from the British show of the same name. Kinda cute. Too bad.

I am soothing myself with repeating that Fringe will return for a fourth season.

These are the new shows:

  • A romantic comedy called The New Girl, starring Bones’ star Emily Deschanel’s sister Zooey Deschanel.
  • Speaking of, there’s also a Bones spinoff called The Finder, a missing-persons procedural set in Florida.
  • Also I Hate My Teenager Daughter, which, from where I sit and having read nothing more than a couple of lines of description, is elevated from snoozeworthy by the presence of Jaime “My Name Is Earl” Pressly.
  • And last for best, Lost’s Jorge Garcia reunites with creator J.J. Abrams for Alcatraz, a drama set in the present about the famed San Francisco prison.

Thanks to TV pal Susan Young (@suetube) for passing on the link.

This news comes a surprising couple of days before what some of you  know as the upfronts, the U.S. networks’ showcase of their new seasons to the big ad buyers in New York City.

This year’s upfront schedule:

Fox and NBC on Monday, May 16

ABC on Tuesday, May 17

CBS on Wednesday, May 18

I’ll post once or twice a day to keep on top of those announcements and any other advance news.
