TV June 6-9: The Moodys, The Kings, Rio Bravo, Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, Loki, Awake, Fresh Fried and Crispy, We Are Lady Parts,

Storm clouds everywhere but onscreen. Onward.

Sunday June 6

The Moodys (final new episodes begin, 8-9pmCT/9ET Fox) blows off two of its three remaining Season 2 episodes. Abandoned by Fox, this Aussie drama adaptation stars Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins of Montreal boys Francois Arnaud and Jay Baruchel. Final ep is slated to air June 20.

The Kings (series premiere 7pmCT/8ET Crave, Crave app) “chronicling the fierce rivalry between the world-champion boxers known as the “Four Kings:” Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns, and Sugar Ray Leonard. THE KINGS traces boxing’s evolution from the end of Muhammad Ali’s era to the era of the Four Kings, set against the seismic political and socio-economic shifts taking place in the United States. Through in-depth interviews and archival footage, the series also examines the very personal battles that each man waged on his unique journey to the centre of the sports world.”

And if you are seeing War of the Worlds premiering its second season this day, alas, it is only on the U.S.’s epix. Unless you have nefarious methods by which to access, and no one could blame you under the international trade Imperative “For Pete’s Sake, Take My Money!”, you will have to wait until Oct. 6, when CBC/CBC Gem will have the latest season. Feh, TV overlords. In the meantime, here’s that trailer.

Monday June 7

Rio Bravo (movie, 4:30pmCT TCM) OK this is not a premiere but it is possibly my favourite all-time movie: 1959 film starring Dean Martin, John Wayne, Angie Dickinson, Ricky Nelson, Claude Akins, Walter Brennan and my pounding heart, although that last part may be audible only to me. Bad guys try to spring another bad guy from jail and the town sheriff, drunk and aspiring adult work to maintain law and order. Is it my enduring crush on Dean Martin? Who knows. I just know what I like. And if you’re in deep as well, here’s a 2018 Facebook video event with Ben “My Other Boyfriend” Mankiewicz and Ms Dickinson, who is a scampish as ever.

Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries (season premier Acorn TV) “This season, while Peregrine Fisher (Logie Award-nominated Geraldine Hakewill, Wanted), investigates cases at an air hostess school, a dog show, and a bowling alley, Birdie Birnside (Catherine McClements, Wentworth) reignites her spying career with an old flame, and Violetta (Louisa Mignone) and Samuel (Toby Truslove) struggle to contain their passion. Despite their busy lives, the gang have Peregrine’s back; because the modern road to happy-ever-after isn’t always rosy and staying true to oneself can sometimes mean hurting those you love.”

Wednesday June 9

Loki (series premiere on Disney+) Who wouldn’t want the God of Mischief to make an appearance right about now… while we’re safely masking and keeping our distance until our second doses? Come on down to Earth Tom Hiddleston (Night Manager)! He plays the title character, who is the brother of Thor. Although … never mind, except if you’re not a Marvel maniac, you should know this series takes place after Avengers: Endgame. So maybe watch that first? Anyway, it’ll be fun. (And if you notice “June 11” on the trailer below, fear not. It premieres Wednesday.)

Awake (film premiere Netflix) “Global hysteria ensues after a mysterious catastrophe wipes out all electronics and takes away humanity’s ability to sleep. Scientists race against the clock to find a cure for the unexplained insomnia before its fatal effects eliminate the human race. When Jill, a former soldier, discovers her young daughter may be the key to salvation, she must decide: protect her children at all costs or sacrifice everything to save the world. ”

Fresh, Fried and Crispy (series premiere Netflix) “Extra crispy pork chops in Birmingham, deep fried Oreos in San Diego, and jumbo lump crab cakes in Baltimore. Is your mouth watering yet? Daym Drops, the Grandfather of Food Reviews on YouTube with more than 250 million views, travels all around the country to find the best unknown fried dishes coming from the streets, fancy restaurants, and home kitchens. Come along for the ride as he hunts down the crispiest bite in town!”

We Are Lady Parts (series premiere Showcase 8-9pmCT/9ET) “The six part music comedy shows the highs and lows of the band as seen through the eyes of Amina Hussein – a geeky microbiology PhD student, who is recruited to be their unlikely lead guitarist. The band’s fierce and enigmatic frontwoman Saira sees something in Amina that the others can’t see. Saira uses Amina’s desperation to find a husband as leverage, offering to set her up with potential matches if she agrees to join the band. Amina has never, ever met girls like this before, and soon gets swept up in their joyful, anarchic energy and punk spirit. But she’s torn and caught between two different worlds – her more strait-laced uni friends and the band, who urge her to find her voice. Will she be the key to the band’s success? And – will she finally find a husband?”

See you Thursday.
